THIS IS THE ENEMY Ultra Rare & Fabulous WWII Poster Winner of MOMA Prize 1942

The poster on offer here, This Is The Enemy is, simply put, the most spectacular and most sought after American poster of World War II. The poster was the winner of the 1942 Museum of Modern Art poster competition, in the category "The Nature Of The Enemy". Subsequently, it was the star of the Exhibition of War Posters from the Artists for Victory National War Poster Competition at the National Gallery of Art in 1943.

The poster is featured in the permanent collections of several museums, including MOMA, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Pritzker Military Library and numerous university collections worldwide. This poster is in B+ condition, small tears & stains have been expertly repaired by Poster Conservation in Stamford CT. There is still some discoloration showing in the text at the very bottom of the poster, however it doesn't detract from the powerful image portion above.

The stains were caused by tape that was previously applied to the back of the poster. It has just been remounted at Poster Conservation on rag paper backed with linen. Ive added some photos below of some of the roughly 200 pieces that will be offered over the next several months, including art nouveau, art deco, German expressionist & Vienna Secession pieces by Mucha, Cappiello, Grasset, Gesmar, Klinger, Carlu, Klimpt, Toorop, Holst, Rhead, Cheret, Domergue, & other artists, some original French & Belgian posters for classic movie comedies featuring Charlie Chaplin & Laurel & Hardy, as well as a few original maquettes (studies) for posters, some by contemporary artists. There are no reproductions in this collection.

Most of the posters in the collection are mounted on linen, but I'm not sure about the backing if any of some of the pieces that are framed. I apologize up front for the less than perfect quality of some of the photos, especially the photos of framed artwork as it is very difficult for an amateur photographer to photograph artwork behind glass or plastic without getting some reflections in the glass. Many of the photos of these posters show reflections, and they typically look much better when you see them in person than they do in these photos.

I will describe all of these details on a piece by piece basis as best as I can with each item being listed. The balance is to be paid by wire-transfer, or personal check within 5 days.
