RARE KOTO WWII Japanese Officer Samurai Sword NIHONTO Wakizashi Shin Gunto WW2

RARE KOTO WWII Japanese Officer Samurai Sword NIHONTO Wakizashi Shin Gunto WW2. The sword is a Koto wakizashi from the famous Sue-Bizen school of swordsmiths and is samurai-mounted. The blade and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The sword has a blade length of 17.5 inches (44 cm).

The blade features a well-made itame hada. The hamon is a Bizen-style koshi-no-hirata midare that is present the length of the blade ending in a midare boshi. There are activities like ashi and yo in and along the hamon. The tang is mumei , or unsigned, and ubu , or unshortened.

Based on the length and shape, the sword looks to date to ca. 1500s and is likely from the Sue-Bizen school.

The Sue-Bizen school was famous for supplying many swords during the Sengoku period of warring states. The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition.

The tsuka has a silk ito wrapping with little to no fraying. The tsuba shows a stylized dragon with two accompanying seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a high quality lacquered black with a rare and desirable painting on the saya in maki-e lacquer technique. It is in Excellent condition and the workmanship on the painting, of a dragon climbing a ken, is outstanding.

It shows a few small areas of missing finish, retaining roughly 90-95% original finish. There is also a kozuka utility knife that fits into the saya. The blade is in Excllent condition. It shows one small micro nick, a few small scattered spots of rust, and some scratches along its length. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire. Given the age of the sword, the workmanship, the rare and highly customized koshirae, and the condition, I think this sword would be an excellent addition for a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
