When a direct hit on the battalion aid station caused the death of the battalion surgeon, Captain Sack, Assistant Regimental Dental Officer, took his place and worked throughout a long period of heavy shelling, administering aid to the wounded, giving plasma, and putting the wounded men at ease.

When the last of the wounded had been cared for and evacuated, Captain Sack moved immediately to another aid station, where he cared for more casualties, which had been brought in from an adjacent battlefield.
