RARE WWII FRENCH 1ST DLM LIGHT MECHANIZED DIVISION METAL BADGE. 1ère Division Légère Mécanisée, 1ère DLM. Was the first of the armoured divisions of the French Cavalry. It was mobilized on 22 August 1939 and dissolved in June 1940.The designation "light" for this division was something of a misnomer, denoting its ability to deploy rapidly rather than their size or equipment. With their 300 armored vehicles including 250 tanks (Somua, Hotchkiss and AMR Renault tracked) and 50 Panhard armoured cars, their three battalions of dragoons on motorcycles, and towed field guns, they constituted the French equivalent of the German Panzer divisions.
The badge depicts the insignia of the 1st DLM, which is a boar inside of a horseshoe. A tank can be seen in the background. The badge measures about 1 3/8" (35mm) tall and 1 1/4" (32mm) wide. It has a pin back, possibly a pocket or beret badge.
It's made of white metal and appears to be nickel plated. The design is done in high relief. Condition of this 1st DLM badge is VERY GOOD. The nickel plating is mostly intact with just a few small spots of loss. The pin on the reverse side is original and operational.
Overall, this hard-to-find badge looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection.
