SUPER RARE WWII Japanese Samurai Sword KYU GUNTO CAVALRY Shin Gunto WW2 KATANA. This exact sword comes from the collection of John Plimpton who assembled one of the top collections of Japanese military swords in the world. His collection, and this sword, are set to be published in his upcoming book Guide to Imperial Japanese Military and Civil Swords.
This sword is featured on pg. 430 and a sample of that page is included in the listing. Will be offering very many additional swords from the. The blade represents the opportunity to own a rare and early katana made by the Japanese Special Steel Company using anti-rust steel in exceptional, and ultra-rare Kyu Gunto Cavalry mounts that feature a custom design and the Japanese officer's name.The blade is in Very Good condition and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The sword has a blade length of 25.5 inches (65cm). It features a bo-hi groove on both sides.
The sword is well-constructed showing a very tight muji hada. There does not look to be much of a hamon, but what is present looks to be a type of straight suguha. The tang is signed Nihon Tokushuko Goshi Kaisha Motte Fushuko Saku Kore.
On one side, which translates to'made with anti rust steel by the Japan Special Steel Limited Partnership Company. Showa Ku Nen Hachi Gatsu Hi. A lucky day in the Fall of 1934. This was one of the early companies experimenting with making swords with stainless steel for military use. This is likely a very early and rare version of the type of stainless steel sword that would be seen in greater volumes later in the war effort.The mountings are an early and rare Cavalry type Kyu Gunto. The mountings are in Excellent condition. The tsuka is saber-shaped and is that of a Cavalry officer's sword. All of the wire wraps are present. The tsuka is also made of a silver color metal and features a rare cross-hatching on the back of the guard. The inside of the guard also contains the signature'Hirai', the name of the officer who carried the sword. The saya (scabbard) is plated metal. The saya shows one small dent and some scattered spots of rust, retaining 90-92% original finish.
There is a locking mechanism present. The blade is in Very Good condition.There are a couple small nicks, one of which is 2-3mm deep. There are some scattered small spots of rust and some scattered scratches along the blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given the history, craftsmanship, provenance, and the ultra-rare Cavalry Kyu Gunto mounts, I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords. This item is original and not a knockoff or fake.
