The US Army Air Forces recognized that a pilot faced grim odds if forced down on land or at sea. Specially designed bailout kits were developed to sustain a man until rescue could be effected, and early versions of these kits included a robust bowie knife to clear brush, prepare small game, and if necessary, use as a weapon. This US Army AAF WW2 PILOT CASE XX EARLY FLIGHT SURVIVAL BOWIE KNIFE is in good condition, with some light sharpening to the blade edge and the top false edge, a small nick in the upper blade edge, moderate cleaning, scratching, and pitting at each side of the blade, some scattered nicking to the guard and left side of the handle, what appear to be the numbers "855 / 0474" scratched into the right side of the handle, heavy deep chipping to the bottom right end of the handle, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the knife is in fine shape, with no other damage.
Most interestingly, it features a hefty 9 1/4" clip point bowie blade with the classic dual striations, sports a tough black composition handle, and is stamped at the ricasso with its maker, the famous "CASE XX. It boasts a mellow brass "ball end" guard, and is a fine example of a very rare, original US Army AAF WW2 PILOT CASE XX EARLY FLIGHT SURVIVAL BOWIE KNIFE.
