WWII Chaplain Alter Cross in beautiful condition- You will not see many of these in your lifetime, great for a WWII and Korea collector and a USN collector, or museum. This is a very high quality piece made to last a lifetime and I was told many are still in use because it is so well built it will last forever. A new basic church alter crosses sell for 1000.00 and are not the quality of this piece and not made for the United States Navy, this piece was made in the USA, most modern crosses are made in India and China, this cross weighs just under 12lbs.I have included photos showing this style cross being used in the US Military. Please note the last two photos are historical photos, not of the actual item in the listing. Portable crucifix from a US Navy Chaplin Kit. Most were demilitarized and had the USN removed or ground down. The USN United States Navy is untouched on this one.
This is the larger more rare version as most I have seen have been about 12" Cross, this has a 17" Cross. This is the style that would have been be used during Protestant. Heavy brass with the IHS attached at the crux of the cross.
The letters USN is on the base. With the base included its about 20 inches tall. It has a three tiered rectangular brass base with an internal steel weight. This rectangular style is scarcer. Than the rounded base examples, all though both types. And can be seen in period photographs. These were used by USN chaplains, who also were assigned to the the USMC / United States marine units. These came in the Portable battle field kits used by the chaplains in the field, they could be easily set up on the hood of a JEEP or tank... For conducting impromptu battlefield religious services and / or burials.
