WW2 Folding Knife M1938 Italian Carcano Bayonet Scabbard Rare Pugnale Baionetta. # The law prohibits the sale to anyone under the age of 18. You are viewing a WW2 Vintage piece of Military History. This bayonet is a rare Italian M1938 "Folding cross Button" Knife Bayonet, (Pugnale Baionetta) complete with Steel Scabbard for use on the Mannlicher-Carcano M1938 Short Rifle (Fucile Corto) produced in both 6.5 mm.

This example has a deep plum blued blade and an Iron Cross professionally burnished into the wood grip. This folding bayonet is a fully functional oddity from WW2, the button release mechanism allows the ricasso to be pulled out, pivoted, and slid back into position. Open its a bayonet, and when closed it acts as a knife. This bayonet saw limited use in Italy and originals are very rare as the design was discontinued. The M1938 knife bayonets were used by the Italian Fascist Army, originally manufactured as a unique "Folding" Knife Bayonet. It was a curious design, that could be folded, just like a pocket knife, however, it was very impractical... As these bayonets were to be kept attached permanently to the muzzle of the rifle. The knife blade would fold back into the stock (this is why the Fucili M1938 has a slotted nose cap), and would only be folded out in case of necessity.

You have to question why the Italians wanted to fix these mini bayonets to their cavalry carbines and why didn't they make them more easily detachable in the first place to provide the soldier with a bayonet as a fighting knife in close combat, or for slaughtering chickens or opening tin cans? Unfortunately, the folding blade gimmick was not of much use as it soon lost its folding mechanism and ultimately had to be remade or repaired to make them completely fixed.

The folding mechanism was somewhat fragile, costly, and impractical for combat use, so the folding feature was eventually discontinued and a steel scabbard provided. Most of the all-metal scabbards had a frog stud, however, some came with a belt loop (like this example).

#There were five known variants. Folding Latch Lock: This example is the first variant and it is the true "Folding" original.

This initial model did not have a "button" for the pommel release, it has a "push bar" which broke regularly. Folding Cross Button: This is the second variant that had the push bar removed to replace it with a button. The bayonet was intended to remain fixed to the rifle. This did not work well in practice, so eventually the folding feature was discontinued.

Fixed-Folding: The third type was the'Fixed Folding' model (made from the original folding blade version parts); where the folding mechanism was made inoperative while retaining the slot in the hilt where the blade previously folded into, the now empty slot. Fixed-Combination: The fourth was the "Fixed Combination" the bayonets were constructed from a Combination of broken & spare parts. Fixed: was the fifth and final variant purpose-built and manufactured entirely as a fixed bayonet and does not retain the folding slot. Only this very short model M1938 could be truly called "knife bayonet" since it is indeed a knife, short dagger, or a great fruit peeler. Patterned after the fascist daggers (Pugnali) it was a popular war souvenir with US soldiers, so small especially when folded it fits nicely into a ladies' handbag...

Even today these mini bayonets are highly sought after, especially in its first folding variant. This is an extremely unusual bayonet and would be a great addition and conversation piece for any of the more serious collectors. This has a short vestigially beaked pommel with a rounded end housing a narrow T-shaped attachment slot. The pommel meets grips diagonally with an internal spring release button.

The underside of the tang and pommel is deeply recessed to allow stowage of the blade when folded. The grip has two-piece dark wood, secured by four small screw bolts, two either side, with washers. Underside rounded and straight, with a straight back flat. Unconventional broad crosspiece with a vestigial lower guard. The central section houses a complex blade locking and pivoting mechanism operated by the slotted press stud.

The blade is single-edged, spear point, fullered on both sides. Back/spine is flat, fuller stops squared. Bayonet finish is blued (all metal parts).

This has an all Metal scabbard with a refurbished blackened finish. The opening is flared to meet with the bevelling on the cross-guard. The belt loop is a straight-edged metal piece held in place by a rivet and a screw set on an angle.

This bayonet is WW2 Vintage, used, and in very good condition for its age and use in warfare. The 2 piece wood grips fit tightly to the tang, an iron cross has been professionally burnished into an indent in the wood grip. The wood condition is very good with slight scuff but no scratch marks, indents or missing pieces, the folding release/lock button is in good working order. The blade has a worn dark plum blued finish with no stain and no pitting.

The edge is worn but not sharp and has no dings. The remaining metal on the cross-guards and pommel has a dark blue finish with a little scuff, wear, and normal marks. Fitted in the correct all steel scabbard with belt loop, with a refurbished blackened metal finish, it has no dents and fits tightly together with the bayonet. # Please note: The Photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos can show up the finer details and condition.
