WWII Mountain Cookset, 3-Piece U. / 1944 from Republic Stamping and Enameling of Canton, Ohio. This is a SCARCE item!!! (Sale is for the Cookset ONLY).

Although designed specifically with the Mountain/Ski troops in mind, and often associated with the 10th Mountain Division, the First Special Service Forces, and Mark Clark's 5th Army's Italian Campaign in the Apennines Mountains and the Po River Valley in the fighting against Kesselring's Wehrmacht troops at the Gustav Line and northward, it was eventually used by all units who could acquire it. This lightweight aluminum Mountain Cookset was developed a long with the M1942 and its improved M1942-MOD. Stove, and intended to act as a container when carried in the Mountain Rucksack described in the QM Supply Catalog as the Tentative Specification J. In fact, this larger Mountain Cookset was the storage/cooking/carrying container PREFERRED by the troops over the narrower, smaller, cylindrical 2-piece container with the'F' bayonet closure (that was manufactured separately from the Stoves themselves). It was considerably larger than the standard Mess Kit (M1910, M1932, and M1942) and better suited for cooking larger quantities of food. The Mountain Cookset 7 1/2?

Tall was designed to serve the needs of two soldiers on an extended operation away from a company mess. The set consisted of two aluminum Pots, each with a Tinned Steel Wire Bail Handle, the smaller nested into the larger, and a Steel Lid for the larger pot.

The Steel Lid with its two folding Tinned Steel Wire Handles could also be used as a Frying Pan. On the top of the Lid is a MINT, intact paper instructional Label (4" x 1 3/4") which reads. To remove cover, bring handles together and lift. To close, place the cover on pots with handles extending outward. Press down on cover, turnign the handles back into place, locking cover on pots. FOR GOOD HEALTH, KEEP POTS CLEAN. + This set is SPOTLESS and SCRATCH-FREE on the interior, never having been used to cook, or carry a M1942 Stove, Gas, Single Burner.

Republic Stamping and Enameling history. Republic Stamping and Enameling was an enamelware manufacturing company in Canton, Ohio. The company was founded by a group of investors led by Henry C. Republic operated the acquisition as an separate plant on the east side of Canton until closing it two years later and consolidating all production at its main location.

In 1918, the company completed the addition of 184,000 square feet of floor space in two new facilities, including a conveyor belt system that eliminated miles of manual hauling by workers daily. By that year, Republic Stamping employed 1,000 people and was devoted to World War I government contracts for hospital and mess utensils.

Republic continued to refine its production processes, replacing coal with oil to power the facility and improving the grounds around the plant to make them more attractive for workers on lunch breaks. During the Second World War, Republic converted to war production and produced canteens, powder cartridges and other items. In 1944, Republic received the Army-Navy "E" Award for excellence in the production of war materials. Throughout its history, the company had expanded into many product lines ranging from Christmas tree holders to aluminum boxes used to haul bulk products at grocery stores. But with consumer tastes and new materials capturing the houseware market, Ecko Products Inc.

Bought out Republic Stamping owners and the 400,000-square-foot facility in May, 1952. A few months later Ecko transferred the manufacturing of Ovenex tinware to the Canton plant and dropped enamel production. The plant closed in 1959 with the transfer of housewares production to a sister facility in Massillon. The Canton plant would reopen in 1961. Ecko ceased operations at the Republic site in 1986.
